CLASSMATE
WAYNE NEWMAN

Wayne Newman was active in a number of our
Class of 1965 festivities as indicated in the photos displayed here. Family members say his death was
quite sudden and unexpected.

He was the father of Brian Newman who
lives in Colorado.  Wayne had two grandchildren.
He was married to Mozella Sanders Newman who
died a few year ago.
While at St. Aug, Wayne was a member of the baseball team.  Those who knew him best say he
loved baseball.  After he graduated he attended

CSX railroad.  As an adult he played softball for what was known as the Downtown

UNO, then entered the Air Force.  Wayne became a long-time employee of L&M then

Services for Wayne Newman are private, but a celebration of his life is being planned.

Baseball Association.  Wayne was also a member of the National Guard for many years.

Mary J. Nickelberry

She was by far the oldest and one of the most fervent supporters of the Class of 1965.

Mary J. Nickelberry was a life-long educator who worked in the New Orleans School System for decades.  She is the mother of our classmate Jerome Craig and lived to be

106 years old.

Over the years, he and his mother made significant donations to our funding-raising campaigns.  According to Jerome, his mother had a real soft spot in her heart for St. Aug. Mrs. Nickelberry, he says, passed peacefully in her sleep on January 6, 2026.

Several 1965 classmates along with New Orleans City Councilman Eugene Green sent her a text message singing Happy Birthday to her when she turned 104.  Jerome says it was a video she really cherished.

Mrs. Nickelberry lived on the east coast near Jerome, but was buried here in New Orleans at Mt. Olivet cemetery.

Our sincerest thank you to Mrs. Nickelberry for her dedicated support of our class.

May she rest in peace.

PLEASE KEEP JEROME AND HIS FAMILY IN YOUR PRAYERS.
